Tooth extraction is a controlled procedure that removes a tooth that is too damaged to save, relieving pain and protecting overall oral health while setting the stage for future replacement options.

When Is Extraction the Best Choice?

Our philosophy is always to preserve natural teeth whenever possible, yet there are situations where removal provides the safest, healthiest outcome. A tooth may need to be extracted when decay or fracture extends below the gumline, leaving insufficient structure for a crown. Advanced periodontal disease can loosen teeth to the point where they compromise surrounding bone and adjacent teeth.

Other common reasons include preparation for orthodontic crowding relief, retained baby teeth blocking adult eruption, and impacted wisdom teeth that threaten infection or damage to neighboring molars. Severe pain or recurrent abscesses are clear signals that extraction, and subsequent replacement, will improve quality of life.

Where will the procedure take place?

After reviewing digital X‑rays and medical history, we will first discuss why the tooth needs to be removed and then where the procedure should be done.  While many teeth can be removed safely and comfortably in our practice, some cases may need the experience of an oral surgeon.  Wisdom teeth extractions, patients with certain medical conditions and anxious patients that prefer sedation are some reasons why we would refer to an oral surgeon.

Post‑Op Care and a Smooth Recovery

After the tooth is removed, a protective blood clot forms within minutes; biting on gauze for 30–60 minutes controls bleeding. Plan to rest the day of surgery, keeping the head elevated and applying intermittent cold packs to limit swelling.

For 24 hours, avoid vigorous rinsing, spitting, or straws because the suction can dislodge the clot and lead to dry socket. Stick to soft foods such as yogurt, eggs, and lukewarm soup; advance the diet as comfort allows.

Mild discomfort peaks around the second day and subsides quickly with over‑the‑counter ibuprofen. We provide written instructions, emergency contact numbers, and a follow‑up visit to monitor healing.

Replacing the Missing Tooth for Long‑Term Health

Gaps invite neighboring teeth to drift and opposing teeth to over‑erupt, altering bite alignment. Discussing replacement before extraction streamlines your timeline and often reduces cost. Options include:

  • Dental Implants – Independent, bone‑preserving solution placed after three to four months of healing—or immediately with socket grafting.
  • Fixed Bridges – Porcelain crowns fused to a replacement tooth and anchored on adjacent teeth.
  • Removable Partials – Budget‑friendly and easy to modify if future extractions are anticipated.

Socket preservation grafts placed at the time of extraction maintain bone volume, ensuring future implants or bridges seat predictably.
