What to Do Before You Reach Our Office

Time is critical for knocked‑out teeth. Rinse the tooth gently, avoiding the root, and place it in milk or saline. Apply a clean gauze pad for bleeding and use a cold compress to limit swelling.

For sudden pain, over‑the‑counter analgesics and a salt‑water rinse can reduce discomfort. Avoid aspirin directly on the gums because it can burn the tissue. Broken restorations should be stored safely and brought with you; often we can re‑cement the piece.

Our Rapid‑Response Protocol

Upon arrival, we perform a focused exam and digital X‑rays to identify the source of pain. Local anesthesia and antibiotics (for spreading infection) address immediate discomfort. We then outline definitive treatment, whether that is a root canal, crown repair, extraction, or referral for advanced surgery.

If swelling threatens the airway or systemic infection is suspected, we may need to refer to an oral surgeon or hospital. Your safety is always priority one.

Preventing Future Emergencies

Many emergencies are avoidable with routine exams, mouthguards for sports, and nightguards for clenching. Early diagnosis of cracks or deep decay allows us to reinforce teeth before catastrophic breakage occurs.

We also educate on chewing habits where ice, pens, and popcorn kernels are common culprits in cracked enamel. Investing in preventive visits is far less stressful (and often less expensive) than emergency care.
