What Is A Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance. It acts like a protective shell, covering the visible part of the tooth above the gum line.

Crowns can be made from different materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal alloys, or a combination like porcelain fused to metal. The material chosen depends on the location of the tooth, patient preference, and functional needs. For example, porcelain crowns are often used for front teeth because they look most natural. A dental crown helps improve chewing, protects the tooth underneath, and restores a natural-looking smile.

Crowns are typically used to restore a tooth’s function and appearance following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has become so advanced that large portions of the tooth must be removed, crowns are often used to restore the tooth.
Crowns are also used to attach bridges, cover implants, prevent a cracked tooth from becoming worse, or an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve an aesthetic use, and are applied when a discolored or stained tooth needs to be restored to its natural appearance.

Procedures
A tooth must usually be reduced in size to accommodate a crown. A digital or putty impression is made of the existing tooth. The impression is sent to a special lab, which manufactures a custom-designed crown. In some cases, a temporary crown is applied until the permanent crown is ready. Permanent crowns are cemented in place.
Crowns are sometimes confused with veneers, but they are quite different. Veneers are typically applied only to relatively small areas.
Caring For Your Crowns
With proper care, a good quality crown could last up to eight years or longer. It is very important to floss in the area of the crown to avoid excess plaque or collection of debris around the restoration.
Certain behaviors such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) significantly shorten the life of a crown. Moreover, eating brittle foods, ice or hard candy can compromise the adhesion of the crown, or even damage the crown.

Patient Review

I saw Dr Quinlin today for the first of two parts of treatment to replace a broken crown and I found her to be an excellent dentist. She pleasantly and professionally guided me through the process of what she would be doing, making me feel very assured that I was in good hands . She is outstanding and so is her assistant, Carrie. I didn’t experience any discomfort except for the minimal prick in my gum to numb the area. Dr. Quinlin is my new dentist and I’m very thrilled to have found her.

FAQ
Will my crown look natural?

Yes, especially if it’s made from porcelain or ceramic. These materials are color-matched to your natural teeth, so most people won’t even notice it’s there.
How long does a dental crown last?

On average, crowns last up to 8 years, but with good care, they can last even longer. Brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups go a long way in keeping your crown (and the tooth underneath) in great shape.
Is getting a crown painful?

Not at all. The area is numbed before the procedure, so you’ll be comfortable throughout. You might feel a little sore or sensitive afterward, but that usually goes away quickly.
How do I take care of a crowned tooth?

Just treat it like the rest of your teeth—brush twice a day, floss daily, and don’t skip your dental cleanings. Avoid chewing on ice or hard objects to help prevent damage.
